Growing the Whole Leader (Tips from Kevin Cashman)

What is the personal growth necessary for effective leadership?

I interviewed Kevin Cashman, pioneer of the “grow the whole person to grow the whole leader” approach to integrated leadership development, to find out. Today I published Part 1 of my Lead Positive Profile with Kevin on my Psychology Today blog.

Kevin is the best-selling author of Pause Principle and Leadership from the Inside Out, coach and senior partner at Korn Ferry. He was also recently named one of the top ten thought leaders by Leadership Excellence magazine.

In the profile, Kevin relates his early lessons in growing self-awareness and his personal insights into the balance between autonomy and intimacy in leadership.

Below are some of the most inspiring quotes from Kevin’s interview. For the full read, please go here.

On lessons from his mother

“She was my first and maybe best coach… she taught me how to use questions to impact transformation and to help grow self-awareness, grow purpose, grow meaning, grow different ways to look at yourselves and situations.”

On balancing independence and personal connections

“You need the autonomy to create and not be too worried about what people think… yet stay connected and stay intimate in business and also in life.”

On the “whole person” growth journey

“My work is about helping people understand the pain and pleasure in their life stories and how to extract values and talents and make a bigger difference.”
